I never set out to become a healthcare marketer. In fact, for the better part of my early career, I was firmly on a different path—one paved with contracts, negotiations, and corporate transactions. I was a business lawyer. And for a while, that identity fit. I enjoyed the intellectual rigor, the problem-solving, and the challenge of structuring deals that balanced risk and reward. But over time, something felt off. The work didn’t feel as engaging and was draining in a way that went beyond long days and billing hours…and lawyer jokes. It was a slow realization, but an undeniable one: I just wasn’t fulfilled.
I don’t recall there being a pivotal moment, but I did begin poking around and exploring other possible opportunities. I recognized that I was looking for something that involved more of a creative bent yet still involved the strategic thinking and problem-solving I enjoyed. I’ve always been drawn to writing, messaging, and the psychology behind why people engage with certain ideas. It dawned on me: I didn’t just want to negotiate terms. I wanted to shape narratives. And I wanted to do it for an industry that directly impacts the health and well-being of people and communities.
At first glance, business law and healthcare marketing seem worlds apart, but once I made the transition, I realized how much my legal background prepared me for this new career. As a business lawyer, I analyzed complex situations, identified risks and opportunities, and developed strategies to help clients achieve their goals. That same mindset now drives how I—and our team—approach marketing challenges. Whether we’re building a brand strategy for a hospital or crafting a recruitment campaign for a home health agency, we take a methodical, problem-solving approach.
Healthcare is one of the most heavily regulated industries in the country. My legal background gives me an advantage in helping our team create marketing strategies that are both creative and compliant. This legal lens helps us craft marketing materials and strategies that balance innovation with compliance—an essential skill set in healthcare marketing.
Both business law and marketing require the ability to craft clear, persuasive messages. As a lawyer, I drafted contracts, negotiated deals, and structured agreements—always considering how to make complex information accessible and compelling. In marketing, the audience is different, but the principle remains: understand what matters to them and deliver messaging that drives action. Whether our team is creating a rebrand, developing a campaign around a health initiative, or designing a website, my legal background helps ensure clarity and impact.
Marketing in healthcare often involves multiple departments—executive leadership, clinical teams, HR, compliance, and more—each with different priorities. My legal training in managing stakeholders and balancing competing interests helps our team navigate these dynamics effectively. By listening carefully, synthesizing perspectives, and aligning objectives, we help organizations move forward with marketing strategies that work for everyone.
Practicing business law gave me insight into how organizations function—not just operationally, but culturally and financially. That perspective helps our team align marketing strategies with larger business goals, ensuring marketing isn’t just creative for creativity’s sake, but a true driver of business outcomes.
I never planned for my career to take this turn, but I’m grateful it did. My legal background, combined with the expertise of our team, allows us to bring a unique balance of analytical thinking, creativity, and strategic insight to healthcare marketing. Leaving business law wasn’t about walking away from a career—it was about walking toward something that truly energizes me. Marketing gives me the creative outlet I craved, the problem-solving I love, and the opportunity to make a difference in a way that feels deeply fulfilling. And that, for me, has made all the difference.
For anyone considering a career shift—or wondering how their past experiences might enhance their current role—my journey is proof that every skill set has value in unexpected ways.
